Register and our Call for Proposals

Build a Hub. Build a Future.

We will in future host further calls and invite African-based universities, think-tanks and research institutions based in Africa to register their interest in forming a hub. These hubs will form the kernel of our collaboration network. They will lead local research and collaboration, help steer the strategy of African Energy Futures, and participate in our engagement platforms. In December 2025 we launched our first call for proposals. The current call for proposals is now closed. Hubs will bring together local expertise and foster strong, ongoing collaboration with national policymakers. We’re looking for teams committed to deep, inclusive energy planning and long-term transformation.

Proposals Overview for Future Rounds

Thank you for your interest in submitting a proposal to host an energy research hub. Bidding institutions must be prepared to help lead the building of an African wide community of practice and must have the intention of using the grant support provided by AEF to build a long-term sustainable institution engaged in collaborative research and training that will continue post-AEF funding. This is not project specific funding but support intended to strengthen or establish institutions focused on energy modelling and planning in Africa. We expect hubs to lead multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder research processes that have an impact on the policy and investment environment. Your leadership and collaboration with other institutions and future hubs across Africa will contribute to a stronger African voice in international fora.

How to Submit a Proposal

The proposals process is divided into two stages. For future rounds, you will be invited to submit a concept note of no more than 5 pages explaining how your institution will execute the requirements of a hub: conduct model based energy research, train the next generation, and convene a community of practice.

The top concept notes (up to 10) will be invited to submit proposals. By submitting a bid you consent to AEF using your concept note to engage with third parties to attract further funding and partner support. You will find below detailed guidance on eligibility and our expectations for the concept note, as well as more information on African Energy Futures.
