African Energy Futures Sponsors EMP-A South Africa 2026

The training brought together a group of energy modelers from Zambia, Kenya, Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Pakistan, Cote d’Ivoire, DRC, Cameroon, and Papua New Guinea, who had been selected through a competitive process, for an intensive introduction to energy modeling principles, tools and methodologies.

EMP-A is a long running training platform developed by CCG for experienced African modelers and energy researchers and provides training on a range of open-source modelling tools that deal with issues from capacity modelling (the energy mix) to micro-grids and clean cooking. Attendees leave the training with the ability to develop initial models for their applications and a plan to improve and implement the models over time. In addition, many of the graduates of this programme go on to work on energy modelling projects in their home countries or even start energy modelling courses at their home universities. It is therefore an important avenue for seeding energy modeling projects across the continent, which could potentially become hubs.

The training was delivered in partnership with World Resources Institute, the World Bank, the South African Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), the University of Cape Town and Climate Compatible Growth (CCG), and it shows what is possible when a partnership of institutions focussed on energy and energy modelling come together to build African-led solutions to address capacity-building challenges.
